The largest bakelite wireless within the collection, measures 22 x 13 x 10 inches. Commonly known as a superhet, the Ekco A23 was the first radio to be made after the end of production of the fabled round range. Very advanced for the time, incorporated five changeable pre set buttons for favourite stations. Three wavebands SW/MW/LW plus an extra feature, a Television sound band. This was because some televisions were sold with a vision only facility ( cheaper ) and relied on certain radio receivers to provide the audio output of the broadcast ! Suppose it was a good idea, but it never quite caught on.

For the technical minded  .... the valve line up is as follows

ECH35, EF39, EBC33, EL33, AZ31

A bank of five oscillator coil cores with five aerial trimmers.

I've tried to create a warm old fashioned ambience built around this wonderful set, so I can sit, listen, read ... and drink a nice glass of wine !!!! Below ... maybe how I would have looked back in the 1930's !!!!!   yes  ... I know ... I'm barking !!!!
harmless though, totally infected with nostalgia and proud of it !! JoolZ ...

Actual cost of this quality radio was £25-10-4d !!! a considerable amount of money in 1946. But like I feel is the case now days. If you want quality and good workmanship, you have to pay for it. Materials and design features used on the Ekco A23 are in fact pre-war, when specifics and standards were I feel much much higher.  What's the old saying? " the proof's in the pudding?"  How many sets produced in 2004 will still be working in 60 years time I wonder ??
